Personal: Son of Lieut-Colonel F.J.P. Butler, of Wyck Hill, Gloucestershire, and his wife, the late Honourable Elspeth Fitzhardinge, daughter of the 2nd Lord Gifford. He was educated at Wellington (Mr Kempthorne's House) and at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst, where he gained the Military History Prize. He was given a commission in the King's Royal Rifle Corps in February 1907, and was promoted Lieutenant in August 1909. He served in India till 1913, when he was seconded for service with the Gold Coast Regt., in West Africa. He served in the European War in the Togoland and Cameroons Expeditions and during the latter, in 1914, gained the Victoria Cross. Lieut Butler had been promoted to Captain in March 1915. Capt Butler was several times mentioned in Despatches, and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order (London Gazette 5 June 1916). He proceeded to South Africa with the Gold Coast Regt in July 1916, and died of wounds on 5 September 1916.
